Gritty City Repertory Youth Theatre Presents:
"The Taming of the Shrew"

by William Shakespeare
@The Flight Deck

May 16-18 & 23-25 @ 8:00 pm
May 19th at 2:00 pm
Student Matinees: May 21st @ 9:30 am & 1:00 pm

Welcome to Manhattan. It's 2019 in the city that never sleeps. Baptista Minola is trying to marry off both his beautiful Nigerian-American daughters to wealthy suitors, and he doesn't care if they're men or women, as long as they're rich! Gritty City Rep ushers in spring with another rambunctious physical comedy by William Shakespeare.
But we have to ask the question:  is it really all that funny?
The Taming of the Shrew brings the Bard's timeless battle of the sexes into the present, exploring issues of power and gender dynamics, and the ways in which words and wit might serve as women's most powerful weapons.

ENVIRONMENT INTENSIVE
June 1st & 2nd
Sat & Sun, 10:00am-2:00pm

 Course description:
How might a stairway, a grove of trees, or a large brick wall influence artistic content and form? The Fierce Play Environment Intensive invites students to explore specific sites inside and outside, asking: What does this place convey? How might I work with the natural lines, shapes and sounds already present? Students will push their own boundaries, tuning in to the larger sensory context of the site, developing quick site-specific studies, exploring performance, story and installation art.

Transferable skills: Improvisational storytelling, listening and observational skills, visual art techniques, environmental awareness and appreciation.    (Scholarships and Work Trade available please contact us at info@raggedwing.org)

Gary Weiner
debuts his first full length album

"RELEASED AT LAST"

Saturday, June 8th
8:00pm

@ The Flight Deck

A powerful vocalist, Gary reinterprets classic songs, giving them immediacy and new vitality. The album shows influences that range from doo wop to jazz and gospel, with a particular nod to Johnny Hartman, Tom Waits, Bobby Darin, Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen.

"
Gary is a belter, with the vocal vibrancy to raise the roof or the hair on your forearms, but what distinguishes this record is a whispery intimacy as Gary takes deep dives into familiar songs to find their core – the thing that makes them timeless rather than familiar." – Howard Goodman, journalist
